What Are Articles in English?
English has three articles: a, an, and the. A and an are indefinite articles and are used when we mean one person or thing that is not specific. The is the definite article and is used when we mean a particular person or thing that is specific or already known.

- She had an appointment after lunch.
- Could you close the window behind you?
- We stayed at a hotel, and the hotel was very comfortable.
Indefinite Articles: A and An
A and an are indefinite articles. We use them with singular countable nouns when we mean one person or thing, but not a particular one. They are also used when something is mentioned for the first time and when talking about jobs or professions.

- We saw an accident on the way home.
- My brother is a teacher at a local school.

When to Use A
We use a with a singular countable noun when the next word begins with a consonant sound. The choice depends on pronunciation, not spelling, so words such as university and useful take a because they begin with the /j/ sound, like the y in yes.

Definite Article: The

- Can you pass me the water on the table?

When to Use The
We use the when something is specific, already known, or has been mentioned before. We also use it for things that are unique in a particular situation, and with superlatives and ordinal numbers.

- Can you open the window next to you?
- This is the best restaurant in the area.
- It was the first time I had travelled abroad.
We also use the with some geographical names, including oceans, seas, rivers, mountain ranges, and countries with names such as kingdom, states, or republic.

No Article
Sometimes we use a noun without a, an, or the. This is called no article or the zero article. We commonly use no article with plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns when speaking generally, and also with most names, languages, school subjects, sports, and meals.

- Coffee is popular in many countries.
- She speaks English and studies history at university.
